About the event
Day 1: Get to Know the Trail! Campers will learn the trail and its history & ecosystems by testing out a new trail guide and installing pre-prepared signs at stops along the trail. We'll also use natural dyes and print-making techniques to make our own keepsake trail flags!
Day 2: Become a Nature Detective and Citizen Scientist! We'll learn how to use guidebooks and phone/iPad apps to identify and document plant species. Campers will also pick up litter and geocache. We'll explore nature journals, how to read topo maps, and make nature scavenger hunts.
Day 3: Nature Survival Skills: bring your inner Bear Grylls! We'll learn how to start and stop fires, build a shelter, tie knots, and identify medicinal and edible plants.
Day 4: Nature Science & Stewardship! We'll learn more about plans to continue nurturing this special inner-city wildlife corridor and watershed. Campers will learn about invasive vs native species, watersheds, and urban wildlife corridors, and conduct water quality macroinvertabrate sampling.
Day 5: Water Safety! Campers will learn about water safety and paddle the bayou in kayaks and canoes. We'll have a trail celebration picnic and cap the week with an amazing new tradition where each camper will leave their own mark on the trail.
Campers will need to bring a sack lunch for days 1-4. Lunch will be provided on day 5.
Campers must bring a reusuable water bottle (at least 16 oz) each day.
Insect repellent, snacks, and water for water bottle refills will be provided.
Each camper will get a Coates Bluff Nature Trail t-shirt!
Cost $250. Camp spots are limited. Once you purchase a "ticket" for camp, you'll receive an email registration form and more camp specifics.
